Lost Creek Fungi Hunt

Project type

Public Art

Date

June 2024 - June 2025

Location

Chatfield, MN

Discover fungi native to southeast MN in this scavenger-hunt style public art installation along the Lost Creek Hiking Trail.

This 12-month public art installation of crochet artwork is spread along a 6.5 mile public-use hiking trail in SE MN. The Lost Creek Hiking Trail is a privately managed, publicly available hiking trail showcasing the Driftless region of SE MN.

A total of 15 fungi are mounted on dead wood along the trail from June 2024 to June 2025. Each is a lifelike crochet model of a fungi species native to MN. Hikers are invited to (gently) touch, take photos, and enjoy this peek into the diversity of fungi Minnesota is home to.

These essential organisms play a vital role in the life cycle of natural environments, disposing of dead matter and dispersing nutrients through decay. Hike your favorite section of the trail to see these new fungi cropping up, or hike the entire trail to spot all 15.
